A UNIFICATION fight between IBF
heavyweight champion Wladimir
Klitschko and WBA counterpart
Nikolai Valuev could happen in
June o r July.
Valuev said this week he had been
waiting a long time t o box Klitschko.
Wladimir, following his latest
stoppage win last weekend, responded
by telling reporters: "I hope public
pressure makes t h e fight happen."
FORMER Wakefield heavyweight Paul
Sykes has died aged 60, reportedly
of pneumonia and liver problems.
A colourful character who could
punch, they say the Yorkshireman
never got over turning his back and
quitting against John L Gardner in a
bid for the British and Commonwealth
titles at Wembley in 1979.
The fight was shown on the BBC.
However, it is forgotten that this
former jailbird took on Gardner
after only eight pro fights.
MATTHEW BARNEY is fit and
apparently looking great in the
gym ahead of his March 2 3 clash
with hot 6ft 2in southpaw LUCIAN
BUTE in Montreal.
Barney has won his last two, but
this is a chance for him to finally
break into the world ratings.
Bute is ranked No. 2 by the WBC
and No. 4 by the WBA, IBF and
WBO.
JUST weeks after winning his
farewell fight, JOHNNY TAPIA
is fighting for his life again.
The 40-year-old from
Albuquerque was found
unconscious in a hotel room
and taken to a hospital in his
hometown on Monday morning. It
was reported he had overdosed on
cocaine and that his condition was
complicated because he had been
suffering from pneumonia.
Tapia is expected to recover,
but police say they will charge
the boxer with possession of
a controlled substance.
DANNY WILLIAMS has been offered
a European heavyweight title shot
at VLADIMIR VIRCHIS in Germany.
He is mulling over the offer, but
Frank Warren said in his News of
the World column last Sunday that
he felt Danny would take it.
Warren had advised Danny to
retire following his loss to Audley
Harrison in December, but admitted
Williams proved him wrong against
Scott Gammer.
