IT'S on! The rematch between
Filipino buzzsaw MANNY PACQUAIO
and classy Mexican JUAN MANUEL
MARQUEZ is set for March 15.
Golden Boy and Top Rank, in
association with Romanza Boxing
Productions and MP Promotions,
promote at the Mandalay Bay Hotel
& Casino in Las Vegas and HBO
televise on pay-per-view.
Marquez's WBC super-feather
belt will be on the line. In their
first fight, "Pacman" knocked
Marquez down three times in the
opening round before Juan Manuel
appeared to dominate much of the
remainder.
BEDFORD'S Commonwealth heavy
king Matt Skelton gets a longawaited
'world' title shot, when he
faces WBA champion Ruslan
Chagaev, in what is the first
defence for "White Tyson".
The bout is set for January 19,
at the Burg-Wachter-Castello in
Dusseldorf, Germany.
Chagaev had to pull out of a
proposed unification with WBO
champ Sultan Ibragimov in October,
due to illness, and Ibragimov now
fights IBF ruler Vladimir Klitschko
in February. Chagaev wants the
winner so if Skelton pulls off the
upset, he could be in line for some
huge fights.
JOE CALZAGHE'S next opponent
remains undecided. While
Sheffield's IBF light-heavyweight
champion CLINTON WOODS insists
he is close to sealing a deal for a
Calzaghe rumble, Joe dismissed
this, and has also rejected an offer
from Golden Boy to fight No. 1
target BERNARD HOPKINS.
"The offer wasn't as much as I
got for Kessler so the deal doesn't
make sense," Joe told Wales on
Sunday. "Hopkins must convince
me with hard cash that he really
wants this fight." On Woods, the
Welshman said, "While Clinton has
a title, he is not a big name and
will not get American TV excited
- and I want to keep them happy,
as that's where the money is."
KALLUM DE'ATH, one of England's
most promising amateurs until
joining Tom Jones' Manchester Fight
Club, made a winning p r o debut at
their inaugural public show at the
Sports Centre. It was the first major
show in the town for nine years.
It was great experience for 18-yearold
Kallum, w h o was thrilled to hear
that he won in the same ring where
Ricky Hatton captured the Central
Area title in 1999 against Tommy
