STEVE WATT, the Scottish welterweight champion,
died on Monday at mid-day. He never recovered
consciousness after collapsing following his 10th round
defeat by Rocky Kelly on Friday night.
THE battle to unify the world heavyweight title starts
at Las Vegas tomorrow (Saturday, March 22) when
Pinklon Thomas d e f e n d s his World Boxing Council
version of t h e championship against Trevor Berbick,
former Commonwealth and Canadian champion.
It will be followed by six more title fights involving
WBC, World Boxing Association and International
Boxing Federation championships. There will be a
box-off f o r t h e undisputed title around the summer of
next year.
ITALY'S unbeaten Patrizio Oliva used an accurate
left jab and clever boxing to win the WBA
light-welterweight title with a split but wellearned
15-round decision over Argentina's Ubaldo
Sacco.
Oliva, the 1980 Olympic gold medallist and
undefeated European champion, was roared on
by the crowd as he held off an increasingly
desperate Sacco in the closing
rounds.
