BARRY McGUIGAN is still the WBA featherweight champion of the
world, but however long he holds the title he is unlikely to face a more
determined, courageous, or difficult challenge than that mounted by the
lightly-regarded Danilo Cabrera of the Dominican Republic.
The 22-year-old challenger had come in as a short-notice replacement
for Fernando Sosa, and had not been expected to give McGuigan any
serious problems, in what was Dublin's first world title fight for 63 years.
But not for the first time the script went wrong, and what had been
expected to be a routine assignment for the Irishman became instead
one of the toughest jobs of his 30-fight career.
HACKNEY'S Dennis Andries retained his British light-heavyweight title when he
stopped challenger Keith Bristol after one minute and 34 seconds of the sixth of an
untidy and mauling bout on the Harry Holland/Greg Steene promotion at the Crest
Hotel.
The result came as no gr.eat surprise as Andries had already comprehensively
beaten Bristol twice. It was a scrappy, forgettable affair, following the pattern of so
many of Andries' fights, with precious little finesse but plenty of raw power and
determination.
MONTREAL — February 15: Undefeated light-middle
Matthew Hilton, roared on by a crowd of 4,247 of his local
fans at the Paul Sauve Arena, blasted out his biggest win as •
he knocked out former triple world champion Wilfred
Benitez in the ninth of their scheduled 10-rounder. The
count was completed with three seconds left in the round.
FORMER ABA champion Steve Nolan is out of this year's
event, beaten in the featherweight final of the Southern
Counties by Ricky Woolley.
England rep Nolan, once of the Fisher club in London
but now fighting for Highfield, found it tough gqing against
Woolley, a 21-year-old trophy manufacturer, who boxed
twice for Young England four years ago.
