WBA featherweight champion Barry McGuigan has the chance to cut
an even better figure in the US as he steps into the Caesar's Palace
carpark on Monday to face substitute opponent Steve Cruz in a
15-rounds title defence.
This will be the second time McGuigan has missed fighting the
original challenger, Fernando Sosa of Argentina. Sosa was the
opponent McGuigan should have fought in Dublin when he wound up
with Danilo Cabrera instead. Cabrera was regarded as a soft touch but
the lanky Dominican gave McGuigan a nasty time before folding in the
14th.
THOMAS HEARNS, who blasted out James Shuler so excitingly last
March, is expected to unload bombs in similar sensational fashion when he
defends his WBC light-middleweight title against slugger Mark Medal in the
main event on Monday's big show outdoors at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas.
This may be seen as a routine fight for Hearns against an opponent who is
a huge underdog.
WITH Santos Laciar relinquishing his world title and
Ubaldo Sacco losing his, it might be thought that boxing is in
the doldrums in Argentina. However, the right fight will
always draw a good crowd, and Juan Domingo Roldan
against Jorge Salgado came into that category.
