JAMES "BONECRUSHER" SMITH blasted
his way to the World Boxing Association
heavyweight championship by overpowering
Tim Witherspoon in the first round of a
monumental upset at Madison Square Garden
and now goes on to meet Mike Tyson, the World
Boxing Council champion, at Las Vegas on
March 7.
AT 20, Mike Tyson made boxing history by becoming the youngest heavyweight champion
of all time, even if he only holds one-third of the splintered title. He needed only two rounds to
accomplish the feat. All that remains now is the inevitable saturation of speculation about his
future career. The world will wonder if he will get to match or surpass some illustrious
predecessors.
USE whatever adjective you like about Mike Tyson's
victory over Trevor Berbick because any one is appropriate:
sensational, electrifying, the overused awesome.
His co-manager, Jim Jacobs, talks of a reign of terror
having begun in the heavyweight division. He says the
intimidating Tyson has reached the same stage as Joe Louis,
in that opponents, regardless of ability, freeze when they
get in the ring with him.
