HEAVYWEIGHT hope Mike Tyson scored his 20th win in a row but had to go the distance
for the first time as he laboured to an unanimous 10 rounds decision victory over veteran
James "Quick" Tillis.
And the 19-year-old Tyson heard the unusual sound (for him) of booing from the
packed 8,000 crowd of his upper New York state fans at the Civic Centre as he failed to
unload the big punching that has made him such a huge attraction.
SUGAR RAY LEONARD, the former undisputed world
welterweight champion, said last week he wants to
challenge Marvin Hagler for the middleweight title in a
one-off comeback bout.
Leonard, who will be 30 on May 17, had his last fight on
May 11,1984, when he stopped Kevin Howard in the ninth
round after being floored himself.
He announced his retirement after that fight, saying: "It
just wasn't there any more."
But now, Leonard says he feels the need to take on
Hagler as "an ego thing" and to give him the challenge he
says he's always wanted.
RENO, scene of the fourth World Amateur Championships
from May 8-18, is a betting man's town. But while
anyone could name half the finalists in advance at the 1984
LA Olympics, which had a boxing tourney of certainties,
the direct opposite is true of the Reno event, where
nothing can be taken for granted, only that there will be 12
champs in the end.
