BARRY McGUIGAN'S after-fight sorrow, talk of retirement,
was not surprising. I've seen and heard it many times.
The understandable down of a brave, beaten gladiator.
Nearly all have come again.
When the bruises have disappeared, the pride restored,
I'll gamble even a rich McGuigan will want to fight again,
despite the light-hearted appeals on TV that he wanted
ideas for another livelihood.
Right now boxing is what Barry does best. The defeat was
not ignoble.
IT REALLY is depressing to hear an intelligent man like
Sugar Ray Leonard talking about a ring comeback. With a
fortune in the bank, a great career behind him and two
retina operations as a warning, you would expect him to
display more sense.
Sugar Ray says he is only interested in a direct shot at
Marvin Hagler, but on his showing against Kevin Howard in
May 1984 he would stand no chance. I hope that the WBC,
WBA and IBF refuse him a rating unless he faces a top ten
opponent as that might deter him.
