LOCAL favourite Lee McAllister
widely outpointed Ghana's Ben
Odamattey over 10 rounds for the
WBF Intercontinental lightweight belt
at the Beach Ballroom.
Odamattey had fought the likes
of Michael Hunter, John Murray and
Michael Gomez but it was a stroll for
McAllister. He won by 100-91 for referee
Paul Graham.

KAZAKHSTAN'S former star
amateur middleweight Gennady
Golovkin (above) is boxing eightrounders
just a year into the pros.
His latest win - his eighth without
loss and seemingly without fuss - saw
him become the first to stop capable
Belarussian Sergey Khomitsky.
It was all over in the fifth and
Khomitsky was down four times.
In his previous fight, Khomitsky
had done a full 12-rounder.
Gennady is a Universum fighter but
Spotlight Boxing promoted. Spotlight
and Universum have family ties.
BACK in the 1980s, nobody was more hyped in
Italy than Francesco Damiani. The reason was
the silver medal he captured at the 1984 Los
Angeles Olympics.
Competing in the super-heavyweight
division, Damiani impressed American fans
and promoters who were looking for the next
great white hope (as they have been doing since
1955, when Rocky Marciano won his last fight).
Damiani's loss to home fighter Tyrell Biggs
in the final didn't damage the Italian at all. He
was offered the chance of turning pro in the
United States but decided to sign with the
greatest Italian manager ever, Umberto
Branchini, who was inducted in the
International Hall of Fame years later.
WHILE on holiday in Ireland in
the early '70s I saw this young
novice amateur box and said to
my brother this lad would go far.
And he did, winning a world title
in exciting style.
Some 30 years later, I have
just witnessed another novice
amateur of the same name box
in Nottingham and I hope he can
emulate his famous dad Barry.
Best wishes to Shane McGuigan,
who boxes in the final of the
National Novices in Portsmouth
tomorrow.
WAYNE GARDINER'S Portsmouth
University BC staged their second
show (on April 24) and fielded some
new faces, what with "first-teamers"
being involved in the National
Novices.
MOULSECOOMB ABC in conjunction
with Sussex Ex-Boxers Association
staged an excellent 15-bout dinner
show at Brighton's Hilton Metropole
Hotel on May 19, watched by exworld
champs Alan Minter and
Charlie Magri.
The night had a bit of a father-son
theme with, unusually for amateur
boxing, Moulsecoomb's Charlie
Robinson boxing on the same
bill as his dad Jamie.
Plus head coach/matchmaker Mark
Wray had his son Oliver boxing.
Neither Robinson could manage a
win, with little Charlie being stopped
in the second by Waterlooville's
excellent Billy Anderson and dad
Jamie dropping a decision to Hove's
Luke Huggett.
