AMAZING Dennis Andries overturned boxing's archaic claims to be a young man's game
and made fools of us again as he outgamed and outpunched Aussie hardman Jeff
Harding at the National Tennis Centre.
Harding, a spring chicken of 25, was sent crashing on to his back by a scything right
hand to the chin in the seventh round of the much-awaited rematch for the World Boxing
Council light-heavyweight title.
KEVIN HAYDE, Britain's only boxer-promoter, is making a
ring comeback - in Africa. He will box at Victoria Falls,
Zimbabwe, on September 1, but does not yet know who
will be in the opposite corner.
The 31-year-old Hayde, who didn't turn professional
until he was 27, considered retiring as a boxer after losing
to promising Llanelli light-middleweight Carlo Colarusso,
1989 ABA finalist, in his hometown Cardiff on March 1 - St.
David's Day.
LIGHTLY-REGARDED Italian Massimiliano Duran pulled
off one of the biggest surprises of the year when he
dethroned Puerto Rico's veteran WBC cruiserweight
champion Carlos De Leon by an 11th round disqualification
amid chaotic scenes.
HEAVYWEIGHT contender Carl "The Truth" Williams
successfully defended the USBA title with a fifth-round
stoppage over game but outgunned Melton Bowen at
Trump Plaza. It was Williams' first start since his devastating
one-round loss to Mike Tyson a little over a year ago,
and the first step toward what Carl hopes will be another
crack at the world title.
LASZLO PAPP (right) retains the European professional middleweight title against
Mick Leahy in Vienna back in 1964. The great Hungarian, his country's national
amateur coach, could now become involved in the pro game as well.
THE much-anticipated rubber match between former IBF
lightweight champions Greg Haugen and Vinny Pazienza
takes place on Sunday at Atlantic City.
The Trump Plaza sponsored card will be held at the
Convention Hall ballroom (approximately 3,000 seats) and
is expected to do brisk business at the box office.
