THE JINX held as Manchester's Joey Jacobs became the eighth
successive British super-featherweight champion to be deposed
in his first defence since the division was reintroduced in 1986.
His seven-month reign was ended by Birmingham southpaw
Hugh Forde, who battered him to defeat in 11 rounds in front of
a capacity and wildly enthusiastic Civic Hall crowd.
TONY "THE TIGER" LOPEZ, the International Boxing Federation super-featherweight
champion, scored what was perhaps one of his most popular victories when he retained
his title with a unanimous 12 round decision over Jorge Paez, the IBF's featherweight
champion who came up in weight to fight him.
Lopez, who only months ago seemed on the verge of retirement until his stunning upset
of Juan Molina to reclaim the title, utilized his strength and an elfective left jab to keep his
opponent off-balance.
FORMER IBF light-heavyweight champion Bobby Czyz
continued his latest comeback with a perfunctory sixthround
knockout over late sub Horacio Brandan at the Taj
Mahal's Mark Etess Arena.
FORGOTTEN ex-champion Floyd Havard has this message for new
British super featherweight king-pin Hugh Forde. Make the most of
your reign because I want your crown next year.
Welshman Havard, remember, used to hold the 9st 41bs title. But he
lost it at the first defence when he retired with a hand injury in the 11th
round of his British championship scrap with Yorkshireman John
Doherty at the Afan Lido. Port Talbot, a year ago. Doherty lost the title
to Joey Jacobs, who in turn had it taken off him last week by Midlander
Forde.
WITH THE European championships scheduled lor next year and the
Barcelona Olympics in 1992, it will be interesting to see whether the
East European countries will continue to dominate the international
amateur boxing scene, as they have done in the past, with the sweeping
political changes that have taken place.
