SLIPPERY Seattle southpaw John David Jackson made
nonsense of the world title ambitions of the longfrustrated
Chris Pyatt before a partisan crowd at the
Granby Halls.
WBO champion Jackson had been considered one of
the weaker claimants to be the best light-middleweight
in the world. In fact, he stands up there with the rival
champions.
NEWCASTLE'S STEVE DAVIS might consider himself
a bit fortunate to come away with 78'/i-78
points decision over Kings Lynn's TONY LAWRENCE
in a hastily re-arranged main event at the
Moat House Hotel.
WELTERWEIGHT puncher Mickey Hughes, St. Pancras
demonstrated yet again that you can never
bet against a banger as he flattened former Commonwealth
champion Gary Jacobs with one explosive left
hook in the eighth of their scheduled 10-rounder at York
Hall.
STREATHAM'S Lou Gent, flattened last time out by British
cruiserweight champion Johnny Nelson, got back with a
win by clearly outscoring Belgian southpaw Jose Seys in
an entertaining eight threes at Latchmere Leisure Centre.
BRADFORD light-heavyweight MAURICE THOMAS
pulled out two thunderous right hands to dispose of
Leicester's JASON BAXTER in 40 seconds of the first
round at Evesham Sporting Club.
LENNOX LEWIS aims to shake off his Olympic heavyweight
champion tag when, on Wednesday (October 31), he
makes his first bid for professional honours against
ancient Frenchman Jean Maurice Chanet for the European
title at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace.
THE FIRST thing that strikes you when you meet Michael
Moorer is his size. At 6ft 2in, he's not exceptionally tall for
a light-heavyweight, but the shoulders, the arms, and the
back don't look as if they belong to what Americans would
term a 175 pounder.
NATIVE SON Charles "The Natural" Murray, made a
triumphant return to his hometown of Rochester, when
he scored his biggest career victory in winning a
lopsided 12-round decision over Mickey Ward. The
victory earned Murray the USBA light-welterweight
title.
MICHAEL NUNN was a very happy man after stopping
fellow-American Donald Curry after 10 rounds in defence
of his IBF middleweight title at the Palais Omnisports in
the South Eastern suburb of Bercy.
Coming back from the post-fight press conference at
two the following morning he went to the private dinner at
the back of the stadium. To do this, he had to go through
the empty arena.
WELSH boxers failed to impress in their opening international of the
1990-91 season at the SAS Hotel going down 4-2 to a strong
Norwegian team. Best Welsh performance came from Jason
Mathews (Aberbargoed ABC) at light-welterweight who received a
magnificent cup for the best overall boxer in the competition.
Mathews, a 20-year-old construction worker, the 1989 Welsh
lightweight champion and Commonwealth Games representative
has moved up to the light-welterweight poundage this term and
looks a sound prospect for future honours.
