A SURPRISINGLY lethargic Lennox Lewis (right) made
heavy weather of stopping Nebraskan substitute Dan
Murphy in six rounds at the City Hall.
Lewis was leagues above the 6ft 5in American, but
seemed content to use most of the fight as a sparring
session. And then when he wanted to open up and cut
Murphy down in style, he couldn't do it.
BRITISH light-middleweight champion Gary Stretch hopes to provide a
favourable comparison with extrovert middleweight Chris Eubank when
he meets Argentine veteran Eduardo Contreras at the Rivermead
Leisure Centre, Reading, tomorrow (Saturday).
Eubank outpointed Contreras over 12 rounds to retain his WBC
International middleweight title in Brighton on April 25, but was heavily
criticised for a boring, unimaginative display.
PECKHAM'S Derek Williams attempts to regain his fighting credibility when he
challenges Frenchman Jean Chanet for the European heavyweight crown at the Foire Du
Trone fairground in the Bois de Vincennes, Eastern Paris, on Monday (May 28).
Derek still holds the Commonwealth title, but his reputation as a heavyweight prospect
- and the big match purses that could have gone with it - was severely dented by his
astonishing 12 round points loss to Chanet last February.
TONY LOPEZ, the former IBF super-featherweight champion,
pulled off a stunning upset when he regained his title
by decisioning Juan "John-John" Molina of Puerto Rico
in a rough, slam-bang fight that had the fans on their feet
and screaming throughout.
THE INGLES have always been a fighting family. There
were eleven children, and most ol the eight boys boxed at
some level or another. One of my best friends was the late
Jimmy Ingle, who became European amateur flyweight
champion at seventeen, and as a pro was a top-class
welter and middle. Brother Johnny also became a good
pro, and today Brendan is carrying on the family name as a
leading manager and trainer.
Low entry numbers count for very little when the final two meet.
Walkover finalists and easy option finalists count for even less
when the final pairing brings together two exceptional talents.
Tomorrow afternoon's (Saturday) Junior ABA finals at York
Hall, Bethnal Green have a brilliant line-up. Where in junior
boxing history are the "great fighters" who would have easily
beaten Danny Peters, Shaun Gray, Stephen Smith, James Branch,
Steven Bendall, Dean Pithie, Naseem Hamed and Paul Webster?
Cast any of the above back against any distorted memory and
the very core of sporting amnesia will be rocked, as the modern
boxer holds his own and even triumphs.
