I WAS surprised to see that the Commonwealth Council
had decided not to strip Michael Watson of his title
because Mike McCallum was not eligible to fight for the
title.
Back in 1988, when Tyrone Downes lost to Jeff Fenech,
the Barbadian had his Commonwealth title taken away.
The circumstances were almost identical but the conclusions
totally different.

HEAVYWEIGHT contender Donovan "Razor" Ruddock
easily brushed aside Kimmuel Odum for a third-round
knockout at Harrah's Hotel/casino, but may have lost a few
fans in the process.
Though the outcome never really seemed in doubt, the
highly-ranked Ruddock diminished a powerhouse
performance by blatantly hitting Odum after the bell rang
to signal the conclusion of the second round. The cheap
shot sent Odum flopping to the floor and the previouslyfriendly
crowd into a frenzy of booing.

MAURICE BLOCKER, a 2-1 underdog, dug deep to win the last round and
became the new WBC welterweight champion of the world, copping a close,
majority decision over defending champion Marlon Starling at Bally's
Resorts Casino.
Although all three officials had Blocker up by one point going into the last
round, had Starling won the round on all three officals cards, he would've
retained his title with a draw.

FORMER two-weight world champion Don Curry
had in unimpressive warm-up for his October 18
Paris challenge against IBF middleweight titleholder
Michael Nunn when he knocked out Puerto Rican
southpaw Jose Duran Martinez in the fourth of a
scheduled 10-rounder at Ballys Casino Ballroom.

THE drama and controversy that have never been lar from Nigel
Benn's career returned with a vengeance as the llford puncher
retained his World Boxing Organisation middleweight title with a
crushing first round stoppage of Iran Barkley at Bally's Casino Resort.
The drama was provided by one of the most exciting battles of
recent years. Both men attempted to club each other into submission
until Barkley's third trip to the canvas resulted in referee Carlos Padilla
automatically calling a halt under the three-knockdown rule.

ONE DOWN, two to go. ITV secured the Nigel Benn v. Iran Barkley bout,
Sky TV will screen Mike Tyson v Alex Stewart on September 22, and
BSB put in the highest bid (or Buster Douglas v. Evander Hoivfield on
October 25.
Howevever, soon many satellite viewers will be turning their
attention to the new British season, and especially Barry Hearn's
Matchroom series on Screensport, starting on September 5.

COMPILING a list of all the champions for this year was a
relatively easy fact-finding task compared with "the pitfalls
and problems in producing a ratings list for both the
senior and junior amateur ranks.
In most cases the winning of an ABA title clearly puts the
champion at the top of his weight group, but this is not
always the case.
