ONE DAY JESSE BENAVIDES may win a world title,
but it will need a change from the sort of luck that
has dogged the Texan southpaw so far.
This year Jesse beat the WBA super-bantamweight
champion Jesus Salud, but it was a non-title fight, so
Jesse had to settle for victory without the traditional
spoils.
As an amateur, in a single year, he won every
available title, but it was 1981 and not 1980, so there
was no Olympic gold medal.

JOHN WESLEY MEEKINS had to show real champion's
heart to come through 12 hard rounds and take the NABF
light-welterweight title from defending champion Santos
Cardona of Puerto Rico, but the chances of him going on
to a world title look slim.
Meekins won unanimously and widely — much too
widely, I thought — but he finished in a mess, with both
eyes almost shut and blood coming from a cut lip. Several
times, Cardona had him hurt and reeling, and with just a
little more urgency in his work he would surely have saved
his title.

WBA light-middleweight champion Julian Jackson  tuned up for his
forthcoming clash with Herol Graham for the vacant WBC middleweight title with a
stunning fourth-round knockout of lanky Wayne Powell from Tyler' Texas on the
double-header undercard.
The finish was explosive, but Jackson's performance up to then had not been that of a
world title contender, let alone a champion.

FLYWEIGHT John Armour and lightweight Patrick Gallagher
earned glory for England when they won a
magnificent gold and silver medal respectively in the
annual Canada Cup multi-nations tournament.

ELEVEN even-money scraps, unrivalled atmosphere and
cockney hospitality. That was the end-of-season bill of lare
served up recently by Fitzroy Lodge ABC under their famous
Lambeth railway arches.
