Boxing News Magazine 1990 History
DON KING (below) has approached British middleweight
champion Herol Graham with an o f f e r to
stage Graham's fight f o r t h e vacant WBC title against
Julian Jackson, whom King advises. King wants to
promote the fight o n August 16, a s CBS have a TV slot
f r e e then.
THE DAYS when any good world title fight could draw a big crowd are
long since past. It is still disappointing to realise that the paid
attendance for the fight between Pernell Whitaker and Azumah
Nelson was only 1,396. The venue, Caesars Palace, obviously limited
the capacity, but it is depressing.
MANCHESTER'S Ensley Bingham walked away from boxing after
he won the North West Counties ABA light-middleweight title in
1983-seven years later he finds himself as the leding contender
for Gray Stretch's British Crown. It is an interesting challenge
for the man who trained on and off on a casual basis before
being coaxed back to the gym and winning the East Lanes
welterweight championship three years later.
SKILL overcame enthusiasm as crafty Roger Mayweather thoroughly outboxed
Terrence Alii to win a unanimous decision over 10 brisk rounds at TropWorld.
The nationally-televised bout between world-rated light welters pitted Alli's
unharnessed zeal against the cool professionalism of Mayweather. And though Alii never
stopped trying, he was completely befuddled by Mayweather's slick defense and quick,
two-handed flurries.
AMERICAN Terry Norris made a successful first defence
of his WBC light-middleweight title with a unanimous 12
rounds points victory over former champion Rene Jacquot
of France.
One year ago Jacquot had suffered a strange defeat.
After pulling off an upset in beating Don Curry, he lost
against John Mugabi in his first defence practically without
exchanging a blow.
FRENCH hero Christophe Tiozzo makes the first defence of his
WBA super-middleweight title at Aries tonight (July 20) when he
meets American challenger Paul Whittaker.
The unbeaten champion was impressive in hammering Korean
Inchul Baek to defeat in six rounds to win the title in March.
BOXING has been good for Les Stevens, and he in turn has been good for
boxing. ABA heavyweight champion in 1971 and later a leading contender
for the British heavyweight title, Les invested his ring earnings in property
and today his 6-bedroomed Tudor house and his business are valued
somewhere in the region of two million pounds.
His contribution back into the amateur side of the sport cannot be
valued in money terms; it is measured in time, experience and dedication
as a coach at the Pinewood Starr Club in Bracknell.
