Boxing News Magazine 1990  History

IT WAS not, in the end, the kind of triumphant homecoming
of which Dennis Andries had dreamt, but at least the
Hackney veteran is still the WBC light-heavyweight champion
of the world after his Argentine challenger Sergio
Merani was pulled out on the orders of ringside doctor
Barry Monk with a suspected broken jaw at the end of the
fourth round at the Albert Hall.

GRITTY Glaswegian Donnie Hood came out of the
shadows to take the WBC International bantamweight title
from champion Samuel Duran of the Philippines at the
Kelvin Hall.
Hood, who missed out for the Commonwealth crown in
1989 and whose attempts to clinch a British title fight have
constantly come to nothing, staged the performance of his
career to move officially into world class.

WBC International light-middleweight champion Tony
Collins will take a rest following his punishing 12-rounder
against rugged Argentine Ricardo Nunez at the London
Arena.
Collins retained his title on a split decision, but nothing
will ever convince me he beat Nunez, a stocky 25-year-old
who combined physical strength with plenty of cunning
and not a little boxing ability.

IT IS generally acknowledged within the boxing
industry that the Mirage Hotel/Casino is going to
take a financial bath - to the tune of several million
dollars - promoting the upcoming heavyweight title
fight between undisputed champion Buster Douglas
and unbeaten challenger Evander Holyfield.

THE Philippines Games and Amusements Board have been
tightening up on their medical standards and one of the first
outcomes was the enforced retirement of Leon Collins. Collins
challenged for the IBF super-bantamweight title in 1987 and was
pretty active with nine bouts last year.

SMALL HEATH lightweight Paul Ramsey made up for a
disappointment suffered by his elder brother Mark when
he won an excellent bronze medal in the prestigious TSC
tournament.
Mark Ramsey was entered for this event last year, but
was forced to withdraw with flu and turned professional a
few months later.

star Cheryl Baker of Buck's Fizz fame at Repton's
annual prize-giving held this year at the Weigh-Inn
club, Kingsland Road.

A WESTERN counties select came from behind to gain a
4-3 victory over a team from Flandrin (Belgium) in
Bristol on October 6, writes PETER FOLEY.
A glance at the records of the Belgian visitors gave no clues
as to how they would perform on account of the number of
drawn bouts marked on each boxer's card. Perhaps there
might be a case for copying the continental system to avoid
controversial decisions in closely-matched contests on this
side of the channel.
