THE world title dream is on again for Kirkland Laing
following the Hackney veteran's stunning second round
knockout of European champion Antoine Fernandez at
the Grand Hall.
THERE ARE so many changes, not all for the better,
in the fight game. (Too many amateurs in Dixie in
charge) I miss the old promoters and managers who
knew that half the wool they pulled over your eyes
was cotton. Nowadays, they want you to believe the
bullshine.
LOCAL HERO Sean Murphy makes his second bid for a
major title when he takes on John Doherty of Bradford for
the vacant British featherweight crown at St Albans City
Hall on Tuesday (May 22).
Murphy challenged Ray Minus for the Commonwealth
title at bantamweight in only his eighth pro contest, but
the move was premature and he was stopped in five
rounds by the ringwise Bahamian.
I RECEIVED a few pages of publicity from the WBC this
week explaining how their rules ensured that mandatory
challengers received justice. Normally I would
ignore such hypocrisy, but it touched a nerve due to
their treatment of Richard Clarke.
ONE OF the tributes to the late Tom Smith came from Bill
Wilkie, who writes: "Tom had not been in the best of
health, and had been unable to attend our meetings for
quite a while. Besides being president of Sunderland
EBA, he was also a vice-president of Tyneside EBA. His
passing leaves us feeling very sad at losing a good
friend. He will be sadly missed by both EBAs and
everyone connected with boxing in the North East. Our
sympathy and condolences go to his family."
LOCAL boxers Steven Bendall, Richard Evatt and Dean Pithie were all
successful in the Northern semi-finals at the Colliery Sports and Social club
while 'bout of the night' saw Marvin Chilton make a tremendous comeback
to win against Carl Grosvenor.
A Liverpool trio of Michael Jones, Lee Burns and Danny Peters are
through to the finals, as are Batley's Adrian Benton and David Atkinson.
PLAGUED by retirements, injuries and apparent illness, a
lot of stars stayed away from the 1990 Cuban national
championships, or as it is referred to in the island-country
the "Playa Giron" tourney, held this year in Cienfuegos up
to the semis, with the two-day finals staged in Havana.
THE boxing community has the chance to help one of its
most deserving and unfortunate members when a benefit
show is staged for Rod Douglas at the Elephant and
Castle Leisure Centre on Thursday (May 24).
Douglas was of course forced to retire from boxing when
he had to undergo a brain operation following his British
middleweight title bout against Herol Graham last
October.
