BILLY HARDY went over old ground and improved on his
previous performance against Scottish challenger Ronnie
Carroll at the Crowtree Leisure Centre.
The British bantamweight champion, who had outpointed
Carroll in February 1989, this time battered him to
eighth round defeat to retain his title for the fourth time.
It was a victory which emphasised Hardy's resurgence,
following his controversial points defeat in an IBF world
title challenge against Orlando Canizales in January.

DONCASTER centurion Dean Bramhald surpassed
Ray Fallone's old tally with a 78-78 draw against
comebacking Andy Morgan at the Beachcomber
Club. Dean is now within one fight of equalling Joe
Somerville's 102-fight record by a British-bom boxer
set in 1969.

STEVE AQUILINA blasted the Midlands Area super-middleweight
title away from defending champion Peter Elliott
in one round at the Kings Hall.
The 25-year-old Wolverhampton challenger dropped
Elliott three times before referee Paul Thomas completed
the count with the fight two minutes eight seconds old.

TOMORROW night in Atlantic City Julio Cesar Chavez defends his
WBC light-welterweight title against Korean Kyungduk Ahn. Don
King has to promote it to keep his grip on Chavez, but he won't be paying
for it - Mike Tyson and Alex Stewart will. The crowd in Atlantic City and
the TV audience will be shelling out to see the heavyweights, but King will
use a large part of the money they draw to keep Chavez sweet. Perhaps I'm
wrong - perhaps King will pay Chavez out of the money he still owes
Tyson for Tokyo.

AYLSHAM'S Jason Cobb came a cropper when he faced the very
promising Alan Adams (Colchester) before over 700 diners at the
highly popular Ocean Room.
Cobb began brightly, twice driving his Essex rival to the ropes
with two-fisted attacks. Then, with virtually his first attack, Adams
drove in a fearful hook to the body which left the badly-winded
Aylsham youngster huddled gasping in his own corner.
What promised to be a testing encounter was all over bar the
counting — and Cobb suffered his first knockout defeat in I minute,
31 seconds. Look out for Adams. This W-vear-old could become
quite a force on the light-welter scene.
