ST PANCRAS welterweight Mickey Hughes hopes to put a big name on his record when
he meets former World Boxing Association champion Alfredo Layne on Barry Hearn's
promotion at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Wednesday.
The match is one of those that probably looks more meaningful than it actually is. Hughes, 28, is a
big welterweight and a hard puncher.

FRANKIE MITCHELL'S label as the best kept secret in
boxing could suddenly become highly inappropriate on
September 29 when he climbs into the ring to challenge
Brian Mitchell for the WBA junior lightweight title.

OLD Man River keeps rolling along. In a big upset, 43 year
old Saoul Mamby upset unbeaten Larry Barnes. The 10
round welterweight contest at the County Center, was
Barnes' first major test, but he found that professor Mamby
still retained some of the skills that once made him the
WBC light-welterweight champion.

EDWIN ROSARIO's days at the top look to be over as he
outpointed Dwayne Swift over 10 rounds in his first
appearance since losing his WBA lightweight title to Juan
Nazario in April.

ENGLAND'S much-travelled amateur boxers face a formidable programme
of international tournaments over the next few weeks including
the long haul to Peru for the World Junior championships.
A Junior Multi-nations at Izmir in Turkey is the first stop (17-24
September) when established Young England stars Darren Dainty,
Patrick Gallagher and David Johnson are joined by Lee Jones,
Craig Manterfield and Mark Richards all making their international
debut.

GEORGE FOREMAN'S September 25 fight against Walter
Masseroni at the London Arena will be shown on Sky TV.
The satellite company have signed an exclusive deal
with promoter Frank Warren and will broadcast the show
on their Eurosport channel at around 9.30 p.m.
It is the 42-year-old former world heavyweight champion's
British debut in a career lasting more than two
decades.
