Boxing News Magazine 1989 History
T H E amazing Dennis Andries r e c a p t u r e d the WBC light-heavyweight
title virtually unnoticed in all the hype of the Bruno-Tyson fight.
Andries destroyed previously u n b e a t e n Tony Willis f r om Houston,
Texas, in five rounds t o collect the championship vacated by Sugar Ray
Leonard following his dismantling of Donny Lalonde in November.
Now the 35-year-old D e t r o i t - b a s e d slugger, who was b o r n in Guyana
but has lived most of his life in London, looks set for a big money
defence against Lalonde.
WHEN is a title fight not a title fight ? T h e answer is when it is sanctioned by
Marty Cohen. TTie January 20 fight, when Ed Pollard beat Nelson
Rodriguez, was billed as being for t h e vacant WBC Continental Americas
super-featherweight title, but that was just an invention of Cohen's. The
title is still held by Gino Gelormino, who is still champion.
Cohen was severely censured by the WBC at two previous conventions
for exceeding his authority by sanctioning title fights, and it is about time he
was totally disowned by them.
TWO colourful characters finally meet on Monday in a fight
that should have happened years ago when Hector
" Macho " Camacho gets into the ring with Ray "Boom
Boom" Mancini.
And the scheduled 12-rounder between former world
lightweight champions has attracted considerable interest,
even though Mancini hasn't fought in four years while
Camacho has had only three fights in the past 29 months.
AZUMAH NELSON, who had to settle for a split decision
last time he met Mario Martinez, left no room for argument
in the rematch as he pounded the brave and skilful Mexican
to defeat after one minute 18 seconds of the 12th and final
round to retain his World Boxing Council superfeatherweight
title.
HAVING heard some disquieting reports on the health of former British and Empire
featherweight champion John Cusick, affectionately known as "Nipper", I thought I had
better check with Bert Daly, my Man in Manchester, and he told me: "I visit Johnny
frequently, and he hasn't been too well of late. He is being nursed at home by his dear wife
Cathy, but his spirit is as strong as ever."
Anyway, Bert had a long chat with John which forms the basis of this tribute to a man
noted for his skill and ringcraft.
F O R M E R Irish j u n i o r champion Eddie Fisher took just a
r o u n d and a half to dispose of his Holy Trinity, Belfast,
c l u b m a t e John Erskine and take the Ulster lightwelterweight title.
LIVERPOOL'S John Sillitoe, ABA bantam champion in
1987, came to the end of this season's title road when beaten
by 19 year old former Junior ABA champion James Keenan
(Warrington Cambrian) in the West Lanes and Cheshire
finals at Everton Park Sports Centre.
Sillitoe, now 23 and back in Liverpool with the Transport
Club after winning honours with Jersey's Pisces club, had
shown super form in the preliminaries. But finals night
proved a disaster against the talented Keenan.
