GARY JACOBS' persistent pleas to manager Mike Barrett
for hometown exposure, after the recent merry-go-round
of London and American venues, backfired on the Scottish
southpaw when he surrendered the Commonwealth welterweight
trophy on a 12 round decision to Toronto
challenger Donovan Boucher before a packed house at
the Civic Centre.
AFTER all these years as a (irmly established inhabitant of
boxing's junkyard, Alex Romeo has suddenly discovered
an upwardly mobile life in the new-fangled supermiddleweight
division.
And the one-time touring loser is now a man to be
respected with ten consecutive victories, seven inside the
distance... a fact that amazes him as much as anyone else.
"If you'd told me in the old days I would have done that
and would get a Midlands title fight, I'd have laughed at you.
WHEN Roberto Duran said "no mas" (no more) against Sugar Ray Leonard eight years
ago in New Orleans it seemed an unforgiveable act and another fight between them
seemed out of the question.
But Roberto has not only been forgiven, he is now more revered than ever. And on
Thursday (Dec 7) they do indeed fight again. Older and thicker in the waist they may be,
but the men are genuine superstars.
The ageing legends (Leonard is 33, Duran 38) are the opening boxing attraction at the
latest big-time Las Vegas venue, the Mirage, where a full house of more than 16,00() is
expected at the hotel-casino's outdoor arena.
ENGLAND'S Commonwealth Games expectations were put
depressingly into perspective during their sub-standard,
though entertaining, clash with Poland at the packed HMS
Nelson barracks, won 6-5 by the home side.
