Boxing News Magazine 1989 Memorabilia

GARY JACOBS, the brave brawling Glasgow southpaw,
stepped into the big time and also out of his class as he was
completely outboxed over 10 rounds by classy, ringwise
James "Buddy McGirt at Madison Square Garden's

LLOYD HONEYGHAN, Britain's former two-time World Boxing Council
welterweight champion, made a somewhat shaky return to the ring as he
outpointed durable Florida state champion Delfino Marin over 10 rounds at
the Hyatt Regency hotel.

UNDEFEATED Paul Hodkinson retreads old ground
when he defends his British and European featherweight
titles against Swansea's Peter Harris at the Afan Lido,
Port Talbot, on Wednesday.
It was back in May 1988 that Hodkinson stopped Harris
in the 12th round the relieve the Welshman of the British
crown he had held for slightly less than three months.

THE on-off career of Liverpool heavyweight Noel Quarless takes
another twist when he returns to meet Michael Murray of Manchester
in the 10 round main event at the Everton Park Sports
Centre in his home town next Friday (September 8). It's a final
eliminator for the Central Area title.

MICHAEL DOKES, who hopes t o challenge Mike Tyson
b e f o r e calling it a c a r e e r , improved his chances with an
impressive third-round hammering of a big, game fighter
named Wesley Watson, from Tennessee, in their scheduled
10 rounds main event at Madison Square G a r d e n 's
Felt Forum.

MICHAEL NUNN is in demand after his somewhat disappointing
win over Iran Barkley. It's not because he's an
attraction but because he now looks rather more beatable
than he did before.
Mickey Duff, manager of John Mugabi, is trying to
entice Nunn to risk his IBF middleweight title against the
"Beast". Duffs plan is to put the fight on at the 12,000-
capacity Sun Dome in Tampa. Florida, in conjunction with
a welter title bout between Mark Breland, the World
Boxing Association champ, and Lloyd Honeyghan, former
World Boxing Council champ.

GARY STRETCH'S British light-middleweight title defence
against Derek Wormald has been postponed.
The fight was scheduled to go ahead at the 2,400
capacity Sutton Sports Centre in St Helens on September
27 but Frank Warren's office have informed us that the
fight will go ahead at a later date, probably in October.
But the cancellation of the September date because of
difficulty getting a TV date has incensed Wormald's
promoter Jack Trickett.
