Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia

• THE WBC have been fair game for
criticism over the years but they got it right
when they changed the result of the Bernard
Hopkins-Chad Dawson fight to a No Contest.
And at least they acted quickly, on
the recommendation of Jose Sulaiman,
instead of dithering about - which is
precisely what the California Commission
is doing. They won't even meet to decide
on the issue until December.

I WAS fortunate enough to be at the Echo Arena for Nathan
Cleverly-Tony Bellew and have not experienced such an electric
atmosphere since Floyd Mayweather-Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas.
Awaiting the decision, the consensus was the gallant Bellew
hadn't done quite enough to win. Upon hearing the result, my
14-year old son's immediate concern was whether there would be
a repeat of the ugly crowd scenes that followed our last visit to
this venue when James DeGale defeated Paul Smith. Fortunately,
Bellew's supporters showed class and applauded Cleverly.

ROB NORTON has asked for the
Board to order a rematch with leon
Williams after the shock loss of his
British cruiserweight title (pages
20-21). Many ringsiders were
shocked by the split points decision
that went against the 39-year-old
from Kidderminster.
BoxNation pundit Steve Lillis had
Norton [below] winning 1 0 of the
1 2 rounds and Rob, who was boxing
to win a Lonsdale Belt outright, says
he has had many phone calls and
text messages from fans who had
him beating the South Londoner at
the York Hall.

SUGAR RAY LEONARD was in
attendance at a celebration for the
90th birthday of legendary trainer
Angelo Dundee. The party was held
in Chicago at the National Italian
American Sports Hall of Fame but
Muhammad Ali, who has just got
over a bout of pneumonia, was not
well enough to attend. However,
"The Greatest" surprised his former
coach with a short video message.
Ali, with his wife Yolanda alongside
him, said, "Angelo, you old."

REPTON HEAD OF COACHING FOR 4 4 YEARS, TONY BURNS SAYS:
"I'm totally against a boxer struggling to make weight. I've seen so many kids make the
weight on the scales, only to lose the bout in the ring. They get beat, because they've
concentrated only on making weight. I'll always let a kid move up a division rather than
hold them down - it's natural growth. Their confidence is better, everything about them."
