Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia

COURAGE, belief, confidence, guts, heart, class, toughness,
valour, skill, class... These are only a few of the words that
could describe Erik Morales' against-the-odds performance
against heavy-handed Marcos Maidana. Erik says he fights
not for money but for honour. Well, he certainly earned all the
respect and honour possible on that night alone. Well done
"El Terrible", a modern-day legend.

Along with Lewis and Riddick Bowe,
he burst onto the heavyweight scene
in 1988 following Olympic success.
He never quite managed to fulfil his
potential but a WBO win over Tommy
Morrison was exhilarating, and he gave
Lewis all he could handle in a 1996 war.

BOXING has got the green light
to return to the Royal Albert Hall.
A group of residents in the area
had opposed the move, claiming
Westminster Council had not
consulted properly. But that has
been quashed by the Court of
Appeal, meaning the historic venue
has now had its licence expanded
to welcome boxing once again.

COMEBACKS are part and parcel of the
game but one that is a little different, and
far more pleasing than the usual, is that
of veteran coach Brian Hughes. A month
ago, he announced he was retiring after
50 years in the game. It didn't last long.
"They've asked me to go back in as
a consultant, and I've said yes, but I'm
not going to do it every day like I did,"
chuckled the 71-year-old. He plans to be
back in the Collyhurst gym two days a
week and has handed the main duties to
Pat Barrett, but the old maestro will be
in the corner when his young prospects,
Scott Quigg, Rhys Roberts and Matty
Askin are in action.

HEAVYWEIGHT prospect David Price
is a busy man. On Wednesday, April 27,
he fights Raphael Butler at Liverpool's
Olympia (see page 28 for preview). At
the same venue on June 11 he will take
on the experienced John McDermott in
another good battle of the big men. Also
appearing on both bills is Liverpudlian
Paul Edwards, who has a six-rounder
on the 27th, and will defend his British
Flyweight title against Commonwealth
champion Chris Edwards (no relation)
in June.
