Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia
WE still don't know about Victor Ortiz, but
we certainly know much more than we did
before and, maybe more importantly, he
knows more about himself. He submitted
in a fight early in his career against
Marcos Maidana but then showed great
heart getting off the floor and beating
Andre Berto.
When he submitted, people didn't think
he had what it took to reach the level of
being a champion and a special fighter.
Then, in the Berto fight, he seemed to
find himself. He proved he has a certain
constitution a lot of people didn't think he
possessed.
RECENTLY a spate of letters has attacked Jim Watt and his
fight analysis on Sky, the latest from Mr Fox of Keighley (BN
Aug 4). Jim is not a commentator but an analyst working
alongside a commentator. In this respect he is well qualified
and extremely able. Jim has been there and done it as a
fighter and, as an ex-world champion who has never lost
touch with the fight game, he has much personal experience
in the ring to draw on
at the highest level.
IT'S great to have a 22-year-old
heavyweight with the power and skills of
Tyson Fury. Dereck Chisora came in heavy
to get Tyson out early, but give Tyson credit
for the job he did. It was no walk in the
park - he had to show a lot of heart and so
did Chisora.
Before he lost his world welterweight title to Lloyd
Honeyghan in 1986, Curry looked like a gift from the
boxing gods. But once that '0' had been squashed,
"The Lone Star Cobra" was never the same again,
despite a brief reign as WBC light-middleweight leader.
Captured the world's imagination as he blasted
through the heavyweight ranks in the early 1980s.
Once he had gallantly lost to Larry Holmes, though,
his destructive reputation crumbled.
Taylor's stoppage loss to Julio Cesar Chavez was
brutal; it injured his 23-year-old body, clouded his
mind, and broke his heart. Anyone who has
read his autobiography - 2 Seconds From
Glory - will tell you his heart remains
shattered today, 21 years after his
premier defeat.
