Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia
JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ, Marco
Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales have
fought top fighters throughout their
careers. It didn't take them that long
after turning pro to get to the point
where they were fighting good guys.
To a certain extent they were all
throwbacks.
One of the reasons the top guys are
considered some of the best in history
is they fought the best, they didn't just
worry about building their records.
They took challenges that would
complete them and make them capable
of doing the things they did later.
CONGRATULATIONS - the Donald McRae
article [BN February 3) was very moving
and really helps us understand what
a tragedy Darren Barker has had to go
through.
When you read about such cowardice
- a gang attacking a one man - there is
no excuse; "drunkenness" does not cut it.
There is a debt still to be paid!
The punishment dealt out did not in any
way equal the crime and therefore will
not deter these idiots from misbehaving
again. However, there is a greater judge
than the ones we are subjected to on this
planet.
JASON BOOTH and Jamie Arthur, at three
weeks' notice, went toe-to-toe and fought an
excellent fight. David Haye and Wlad Klitschko
take note! Amir Kahn take note! If you're a
professional fighter, then fight. Fighters these
days, especially at the top level, very rarely
meet; they blame the money men. They blame
the other guy, they blame governing bodies,
any excuse. Watch Booth and Arthur.
HE may have been a largely unsung
hero, but until eight months ago
Puerto Rican marvel Ivan Calderon
was considered by many hardcore
boxing fans to be in the upper reaches
of the world pound-for-pound
rankings. Despite going 35 fights
unbeaten, the 5ft stylist is n o puncher
and has spent his career in the
unfashionable straw and light-flyweight
divisions, both factors contributing to
his relative lack of fame.
AFTER conceding the British supermiddleweight
title to James DeGale,
Paul Smith decided to change. Now he
has switched his training base to Joe
Gallagher's Denton gym.
"I've known Joe for a while. I've seen
what he's done with [Matthew]
Macklin. I've seen what he's done with
John Murray f r om scratch," explained
Paul.
LIKE Gary Mason's 36 ring adversaries,
the All Saints Church in Carshalton didn't
quite know what had hit it. More than 1,000
gathered to say goodbye to one of the most
popular British boxers of recent years with
rousing affection. Many more were forced to
peer in from the street as the majestic building
gleefully took the strain of the former British
and Commonwealth heavyweight champion's
funeral.
THE world middleweight title is
supposed to be one of the sport's
treasures, yet on Saturday (February
19) Felix S t u rm defends his WBA
(Super) sliver of recognition against an
opponent, Ronald Hearns, whose chief
qualification is his name.
