Boxing News Magazine 2011 Memorabilia
Delightful boxer in his pomp [pictured\ and thought,
along with Marvin Hagler, to be the finest in the sport
when Lloyd Honeyghan trounced him to capture the
world welterweight title in Atlantic City in 1986. The
removal of his cloak of invincibility revealed wounds
that, despite winning the WBC light-middleweight
belt two years later, never really healed.
AFTER losing in a gutsy
effort against the IBF's supermiddleweight
champion Lucian
Bute, Brian Magee now hungers
for a portion of the WBA title. On
July 30 he will travel to Costa Rica
to fight Jaime Barboza in San Juan
for that body's "interim" strap.
With Panamanian trainer Oscar
Checa in his corner the Belfast man
will have few qualms about boxing
in Central America. Victory should
set him on a path to the WBA's
"regular" title, which Dimitri Sartison
is scheduled to defend against
Stanyslav Kashtanov in Ukraine on
August 20. It could also tee up some
lively domestic super-middleweight
contests with the likes of George
Groves or James DeGale.
AMIR KHAN may respect veteran
American Zab Judah, his opponent on
July 23 at Las Vegas, but that has not
stopped the WBA light-welterweight king
from looking ahead to a superfight with
the comebacking Floyd Mayweather.
Khan's decision to rehire Alex Ariza is a
sign of how crucial the Judah fight is, but
Khan is keeping one eye on "Money's"
September 17 return against Amir's
amateur victim Victor Ortiz.
NICK BLACKWELL already wrote a small
chapter of history when he became the
youngest holder of the English title last
year. The precocious 20-year-old now
wants to claim a bigger prize, the British
middleweight belt.
IF there's anything to be gleaned from
Lateef "Power" Kayode's latest bout,
it's that the Nigerian cruiserweight
is still a work in progress. Kayode j
bounced back from a disappointing i
showing against Nicholas Iannuzzi
in February with a better one at the '
Chumash Casino, dropping Matt
Godfrey three times en route to a
unanimous 10-round decision.
QUALITY Argentine southpaw Omar
Narvaez (8st 2 3/4lbs) retained his WBO
super-flyweight crown for the fourth time
and extended his unbeaten record to 37
(35 wins, two draws) outpointing William
Urina (8st 2 i/4lbs) in his home country.
All three judges scored it 117-110 at
Luna Park with Colombian Urina, a big
underdog, coming in as a late replacement
for Juan Carlos Sanchez Jnr.
The challenger was deducted a point in
round six for low blows.
