Boxing News Magazine 2011 History
I'VE known Roy Jones Jnr since we were
amateurs in the mid-ig8os. I've trained
and sparred with him and seen him fight live,
pro and amateur, more than 30 times. He is
by far the most talented boxer I've watched.
Maybe the most impressive element to his
repertoire was his intelligence and common
sense approach to boxing.
I remember when Terry Norris brilliantly
outboxed Simon Brown back in May 1994
to regain the WBC light-middleweight
title. I saw Roy the next day at the Triple
Threat Gym in New Jersey, where he was
training to face Thomas Tate. I mentioned
how great Norris had looked because, in
their first match several months earlier
Terry had foolishly tried to slug with Brown
and ended up getting knocked out in four
rounds.
IT is refreshing and right to read of Bob Williams and
the Home Counties EBA's intentions to honour the 50th
anniversary year of Terry Downes winning the undisputed
middleweight title. His was a career set in the most competitive
weight class of all, in arguably the most competitive period
ever, and at a time when there were only eight divisions and
just one champion. He mixed with the best the world could
offer and beat them. Downes' career is well known, but what
is not so well broadcast is his hundreds of evenings out of his
own time and expense supporting countless causes large and small.
BRITISH welterweight star Kell Brook
is hoping to shine when he makes his
promotional bow for Matchroom.
He split with long-time promoter
Frank Warren last week and Eddie Heam
wants a big-name opponent for a Brook
homecoming in Sheffield - Breidis
Prescott, Paulie Malignaggi, Andreas
Kotelnik, Erik Morales or Marco Antonio
Barrera, so Brook, ranked No. l by the
WBO, can make a statement.
"He wants big fights," said Hearn.
"We'd love him to fight Matthew Hatton
but he wouldn't take it in a million years."
Warren could see how things were
going and blames the involvement of
Brook's father, Terrence, for the split. The
promoter said that, in the end, he would
not have continued promoting Kell.
FORMER WBA 'world' champion,
Gabriel Campillo, returns to the
ring tomorrow (Friday April 15)
in Madrid for an eight-rounder
against little-known Russian
Sergey Beloshapkin. It will be
Campillo's first contest in nine
months and, providing he wins,
the Spaniard is hoping to secure a
big fight later in the year with IBF
champion Tavoris Cloud.
IN 1981 David McDonnell
and Mick Whitely decided to
reform the Ellesmere Port
boxing club. The trade union
at the Vauxhall Motors plant
backed them, hence the gym's
name.
Paul Lloyd was one of their
most successful boxers. As
an amateur he missed out
on a place at the Barcelona
Olympics but as a pro won
British, Commonwealth and
European bantamweight
titles. He also challenged Tim
Austin and the great Marco
Antonio Barrera for 'world'
honours.
