Boxing News Magazine 2011 History
SOMETIMES the victory does not lie in
the result or even the effort, but in the
opportunity. That is small consolation
to Vinny Maddalone, who was stopped
in five rounds by Tomasz Adamek on
December 9.
If the ring were his school, you
could say that Maddalone graduated
from club fighter to journeyman the
night he took on Adamek. Obviously
he wanted more. An unlikely victory
would have propelled him into title
contention, but even the Flushing, New
York heavyweight's most ardent supporters
were not holding their breath.
MATTHEW HATTON has verbally
agreed to face SAUL ALVAREZ on
March 5 in Anaheim, California.
"[Golden Boy matchmaker]
Robert Diaz called me last week
and said that Alvarez's fight with
[WBA champion, Vyacheslav]
Senchenko had fallen through
and would I be interested in
fighting him," Hatton revealed.
"Robert said it would be at 147
[lbs] and hopefully an eliminator
for a world title. I agreed the
fight 100 per cent."
"Magic" Matthew is yet to hear
back from Golden Boy although
their CEO Richard Schaefer has
told Hatton Promotions
counterpart Gareth Williams he is
waiting for confirmation from
US broadcasters HBO.
BARNSLEY bantam Josh Wale is
crestfallen after seeing a prospective
shot at the English title fall through.
Wale received a call from his manager
Tommy Gilmour offering a challenge
to champion Craig Lyon on the
Hattons' February 26 show at Bolton
Arena and immediately accepted.
"But on Saturday," Wale said,
picking up the story. "Tommy rang
my dad and said it was off, that
Lyon's team didn't fancy it. I were
heartbroken. It was a big chance
against a 12-0 kid. I wanted a chance at
bantam and came in under the bantam
limit in my last fight to show the Board
that's my weight now."
