Boxing News Magazine 2011 History
I WAS shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the death of
Mick Carney. Mick and I go way back, since the mid 1970s
when I began as a BN 'staffer'. Mick showed me nothing
but courtesy and generosity of spirit and we became firm
friends. The words of Daniel Herbert, Nick Bond and editor
Tris Dixon (BN November 24) pay warm tribute to this true
hero of our sport. Amateur boxing, and the world in general,
is the poorer for Mick's passing. The sport has lost one of its
greatest stalwarts, and I have lost a wonderful mate.
FRANK WARREN has postponed
this Friday's December 9 Liverpool
card headlined by James DeCale
[below] taking on Spain's Jose
Maria Guerrero. The show, due to
be hosted by the Echo Arena and
broadcast on BoxNation, will now
take place on Friday January 27,
MIKE TYSON is heading to Dubai in
January to promote an Arab boxing
tournament. Tyson will attend as
"guest of honour" to witness 12
fights featuring male and female
boxers from Europe and the Middle
East. According to the Federation
of Arab Boxing, the former
heavyweight champion will earn
$160,000 for his appearance.
SHANNAN TAYLOR remains in
intensive care but is no longer
on life support. The 39-year-old
former world title challenger was
left fighting for his life after an
accidental drug overdose. Reports
from his native Australia indicate
the police are investigating the
incident after it emerged the
substance Taylor inhaled - believed
to be cocaine - was in fact heroin.
