There is a first world title shot for
gifted Rico Ramos, who tackles WBA
super-bantamweight champion Akifumi
Shimoda. The Japanese southpaw has
won 23 of 26 (one draw), scoring 10
stoppages, taking the title from Ryoi
Li Lee, the man who in turn stripped
the crown from tough Thai Poonsawat
Kratingdaenggym, who had relieved
Ireland's Bernard Dunne of his belt.
It is a big ask of Ramos and there is
a school of thought that at 24 and 19-0
he might have been moved too fast. He
could do it, though, earning a contentions
decision.
FOR only the second time in his
professional career, Lucian Bute,
28-0 (23), will step into the ring in
his native Romania this Saturday
(July 9). All but four of his bouts
have taken place in his adopted
home of Quebec in Canada.
The IBF super-middleweight
king will defend his title for the
eighth time against Jean-Paul
Mendy, 29-0-1 (16). Although both
champion and challenger have
yet to taste defeat, the quality of
opponents on their CVs has come in
for much criticism.
BURNLEY'S Sandygate ABC played
host to a team from the Emerald Isle
and what a diamond of a show it was
at the sold-out New Era Complex,
Accrington.
Eight boxers representing Thurles
ABC, Tipperary "came a long way"
in returning a fixture from last year,
when the East Lanes outfit competed
across the Irish Sea.
WHEN Nick Wilshire (National Smelting
Co.) won the 1979 middleweight title, no
one could have imagined it would be 32
years before another Bristol ABA Senior
triumph.
The drought was ended by Sam
Pomphrey when he beat Michael Watson
18-8 in the light-heavyweight decider at
Colchester on May 13.
Nobody can say Hartcliffe's Pomphrey,
21, had it easy. As his coach at the Broad
Plain club, Dennis Stinchcombe MBE,
points out: "Sam had to box in every
round of the championships."
ON June 10 The Academy ABC in Luton
held their first show after being up
and running for just over two years. In
attendance was patron and former IBO
champion Billy Schwer, his father Billy
Schwer Snr, former WBU champion
Graham Earl, former British champion
Mickey Cantwell and local pro hopeful
Michael Devine.
