SCOTTISH light-welterweight champion George Peacock
maintained his claims for inclusion in the national eliminators
by surviving Dave Allen's big-hitting aggression in the
last rounds to scrape home bloodied and battered by half a
point in a verdict which resulted in uproar at Morley's,
reports GAVIN LAFFERTY.
ALTHOUGH he got the job finished in eight rounds,
MICHAEL SPINKS looked a bit sloppy in his World
Boxing Association light-heavyweight title defence against
MURRAY SUTHERLAND, televised by ABC from the
Playboy casino hotel in Atlantic City.
RALPH CITRO of Blackwood, New Jersey, has taken on a
bewildering task. He is attempting to bring about some
order to the miasma of boxing records.
The idea is not new, but past efforts never really got off the
ground because: (1) The project involved more work than anyone
was really willing to put into it, and (2) the project, until now,
required users to dispense with that most precious of human commodities
- money.
BOXING COMMENTATOR Harry Carpenter would
probably like a quid for every time he has been asked if he
was once a professional flyweight. Those who ask are mixing
him up with Henry Carpenter, a top eight-stoner of the 40s
and 50s, who came from the Peckham area of London.
TALK of the ABA semi-finals being switched to London
has angered Northern fans and officials.
It has been suggested that they should be moved to the Albert
Hall, Kensington, where the London ABA championships are
held and where professional tournaments are staged by promoters
Mike Barrett and Mickey Duff.
The first hint of the move South came during this year's ABA
semis, which were held for the first time at the Guild Hall,
Preston, Lancashire.
For many years, the semi-finals and finals were held on the
same day at Wembley Pool. The semis usually started about
3.30 or so and ran right through, with a short interval for the
finals.
