England amateurs  face U.S  challenge

Gilpin bounces back to score a fine victory

FORMER BRmSH light-wetter king Joey Singleton got a champion's send-off at the Elephant &
Castle Leisure Centre the night his stablemate Sid Smith won the Southern Area welterweight title.
On hand were (left to right, back row): George Feeney, Dave Green, Maurice Hope, Dave Proud,
Billy Aird, Terry Downes, Joey, Henry Cooper, Terry Lawless, Paddy Byrne, and Frank Bruno. (Front
row): Des Morrison, Jimmy Revie, Dave Smith, Terry Spinks, and MC Billy Jones.

EXPERIENCE and stamina enabled Eusebio Pedroza to
keep his WBA featherweight tide in the 15-round draw with
Bernard Taylor on October 16. It was a near thing for the
champ from Panama but he stuck to his job against a fast,
skilful challenger and kept those hands moving in the vital
closing rounds while Taylor was still looking to steal points.
Taylor's hometown crowd at Charlotte, South Carolina,
roared at even the misses from the local. Pedroza was booed
into the ring and at times during the bout after warnings.
With one fighter chasing but not always connecting, the
other boxing with style but doing a lot of retreating, it
wasn't the easiest fight to score.

HUGE James Broad keeps winning and continuing to unimpress. The
heavyweight from New Jersey via North Carolina scored his 10th win in a
row with a majority 10 round decision over ex-convict Donnie Long, out
of Columbus, Ohio, in a CBS-TV fight from the Claridge casino hotel,
Atlantic City, on October 17.
The Sunday afternoon show was put together to fill sports programming
schedules as the American football players' strike continued.
Broad weighed 17st 51b and seemed to be lugging his weight around
the ring.
