ARGUELLO FLOORED BUT WINS

Ambitious Pearce looks set

James moves up the ratings

McCallum's ready for the big time

THE kind of heavyweight action which always goes down well with the fans seems
assured at the Albert Hall on Tuesday when Gordon Ferris and David Pearce clash in
their 12-rounds final eliminator for Neville Meade's British tide, writes TIM MO.
It is one of the more attractive domestic pairings possible in this rather lean season of
British boxing.

IMPROVING Swansea-based middleweight Doug James
earned a notable victory over Billy Lauder, stopping him at
the end of the fourth of their scheduled eight threes top liner
at the NSC, writes NICK HALLING.
The stoppage occurred between rounds, when it was
decided that the damage to Lauder's left eye was too serious
to allow him to continue.

FRANKIE DEANS is a little man from a big boxing family
in Jarrow, a town on the south bank of the River Tyne that
has seen some hard times. Frankie used to run amateur
boxing at the Perth Green ABC with his brothers and before
that he was at St. Kilda's Club.

THE boxing world was shocked by the news that Sugar Ray Leonard had
suffered a detached retina that, while repaired by surgery, places his career in
doubt.
Many in the fight game seem to feel that Leonard, world welterweight champion
and the biggest drawing card in the business, will retire. He is financially independent,
has a lot of things going for him outside the ring, and his wife, Juanita, is known
to be against him continuing to box.

THE England selectors have rejected
ABA featherweight champion
Herman Henry for this autumn's
Brisbane Commonwealth Games.
Last Friday, by a 2-1 majority which
stands logic on its head, they decided it
will be Gloucester's Peter Hanlon who
makes the trip to Australia - regardless
of him being conclusively outpointed by
Henry in the English ABA semi-finals.
All judges recorded the same 59-58 score.
