COUNTRYWIDE NABC RESULTS
ERROL CHRISTIE did the expected on his
debut in front of a wildly enthusiastic hometown crowd at
the Coventry Sports Centre.
Christie stopped experienced Terry Matthews of Swansea
at the end of round three, Matthews being pulled out by
his corner in the interval due to a cut over his right eye.
Despite the inconclusive finish, Christie, who won a
record 10 national titles as an amateur, was well on his way
to victory.
VETERAN heavyweight contender Billy Aird bridged the
generation gap again as he gave 15 years and a decisive
points beating to 21-year-old Steve Gee of Birmingham in
their rearranged main event at the Concert Hall. Gee replaced
the original opponent Dragomir Popovic, who was
stopped recently by Tony Mundine in Australia
ONE of the true fighting champions, Larry Holmes makes
his 13 th defence of his World Boxing Council heavyweight
title tonight (Friday) when he takes on the rugged Texan
fighting out of Philadelphia, Randall "Tex" Cobb, at the
Astrodome in Houston.
FRANK BRUNO continued to show improvement and remarkable promise
with his first round defeat of the experienced German Georg Butzbach.
Bruno made the German quit after he had taken a tremendous body shot at
:wo minutes exactly of the round in the scheduled eight-rounder.
There was a mixture of boos and clapping, the applause for Bruno, the boos
for the German
JIMMY PRICE, 1982 ABA and Commonwealth
middleweight champion has
turned professional with London promoter
and manager Frank Warren.
Liverpudlian Price, 22, is currently
unemployed and his decision to join the paid
ranks seems a wise one. He is a stylish
southpaw with a good punch
and he could make quite an impact.
