LAWFORD'S 40-SECOND STDNNER
Driscoll has too many moves for brave Price
TONY SIBSON bulldozed his way to a world middleweight title fight
with Marvin Hade: by punching out a wide 12-rounds points victory
over Dwight Davison of Detroit at the National Exhibition Centre.
Sibson's tactical battle was carried out to perfection, bobbing and
weaving inside Davison's long reach and working in close range. But
Davison, who came with the reputation of a fast, flashy puncher proved a
great disappointment.
MANCHESTER light-heavy Danny Lawford needed just
40 seconds to despatch Streatham favourite Steve Lewin at
the Anglo-American Sporting Club. It was scheduled for
eight-threes.
Lawford's first punch, a terrific left hook to the chin,
floored Lewin in his own corner and from that moment the
bout was as good as over.
BRITISH middleweight champion Roy Gumbs has a Lonsdale Belt of his
own to show for his 13th round stoppage of game challenger Glen McEwan
before a capacity crowd at Liverpool Stadium - but his performance in
earning it did little to enhance his prospects of a domestic showdown with
the man he succeeded as champion, Tony Sibson.
Gumbs, 27, looked menacing in the early rounds but was frustrated by
McEwan's shifty defensive boxing. When McEwan stepped up his pace and
started jarring the champion with heavy rights to the head, the title seemed
likely to change hands.
HIGHLIGHT of the Ramsgate tournament at the Red Arrow
Social Club was the war in which the Army's Mick
Pannel outpointed the promoting club's Derek Woodrow.
The pair slugged it out like old time Amercian professionals and
at one stage, it became so hectic that both went out of the ring, with
the crowd roaring them on.
