MITTEE'S POWER TELLS
The new Bristol Bomber
ABA semi-finals
I HAVE never been one for writing letters but I feel that I
must place on record my appreciation and admiration for
Maurice Hope, the champion I was privileged to manage
as a fighter and the man I am proud to call a friend.
His exceptional boxing exploits are well known -
British Olympic representative before turning professional
and winning British, European, Commonwealth,
and world championships at light-middleweight.
A BOXER taking part in his first professional fight could well be expecting
to meet an opponent somewhere around his own age and experience. This
didn't happen to former Rotherham bantamweight Ronnie Bissell.
His opponent turned out to be former world flyweight champion Peter
Kane. Talk about being thrown in at the deep end. The date was September
4, 1946, the venue Cardiff, and the result was predictable - a two-round
defeat.
On the basis that his next opponent couldn't possibly be any better than
Kane, Ronnie took a couple of months off, then went to Ramsgate to knock
out Pat Butler (not the former welter champ) in two rounds. And to wind up
1946 Ronnie appeared at the Royal Albert Hall, being outpointed by Charlie
Squire.
