SID SMITH of Forest Hill took the vacant Southern Area
welterweight title with a magnificent sixth-round injury
stoppage over Peter Neal, Swindon, in the 10-round main
event at the Elephant and Castle Recreation Centre.
It completed an Area title double for Smith, the former
light-welterweight champ who moved up a division this
year.

STUDENTS of the American fight scene will know about
Greg Coverson, an unbeaten Detroit lightweight who goes
by the nickname of "Candyman".
Coverson got some unexpected TV exposure over the CBS
network on Sunday, October 10, in a Detroit local derby at
the Cobo Arena against ex-amateur veteran Davey Annstrong.
He came through in style, winning a unanimous
decision after a superb 10-rounder, fists flying all the way.

FORMER British and European heavyweight champion Joe Bugner makes
his much ballyhooed return to the British ring with a 10-rounder against
Winston Allen of Swansea at the Bloomsbury Crest Hotel on Thursday.
Bugner is being promoted by Frank Warren, who has secured ITV coverage
of the bill.
It is a measure of the parlous state of British heavyweight boxing, in fact
British boxing in general, that Bugner's comeback can be viewed with
interest. He was never the most charismatic of performers.
Bugner was beaten on cuts, in two rounds by Earnie Shavers in his last fight
but was on the floor and had taken heavy blows. It seems Shavers was on the
way to a conclusive victory.

THE Irish ABA has hit a financial crisis, with funds
urgently needed if the sport is to survive.
Delegates from all over Ireland, including the north, were
told at a packed annual convention in Dublin that efforts
would have to be made to stop the slide. The three home
international matches last season against Sweden, the USA
and Scotland - lost money.
