MINTER TO HELP THE YOUNGSTERS

BATTERSEA light-heavyweight Devon Bailey put himself
into British title reckoning with an impressive fifth round
knockout over Ben Lawlor, Kilkenny, in the eight threes
main event at the Cabaret Club.
Promoters Alan Minter and father-in-law Doug Bidwell
brought professional boxing to Newmarket for the first time
but received only an average response from the locals despite
an evening which included dining and dancing as well as an
attractive show.

IT was early 1941, in the days of the blackout. A Paisley
'bus was groping it way along when the driver suddenly
pulled the vehicle to a dead stop. He climbed down and was
met by the conductor.
"I've bumped into something, mate", he said, then they
stumbled over a body. Together they carried it into a shop.
Someone 'phoned for an ambulance while the others examined
the litde man of around 60 who was lying unconscious
on the floor.

HAVE YOU heard the one about the amateur who turned pro, had
one paid fight, changed his mind and went back into the amateurs for
12 months, then turned pro again? "Codswallop," you may say.
Nevertheless, perfecdy true. The boxer was former Birkenhead bantam-
cum-feaiher Frankie Williams, and it happened like this.
Born on February 12, 1925, Frankie started boxing at eleven, and
added a year to his age so that he could box in the Northern Counties
Schoolboys' Championships, winning the five-stones tide.
From 19B6 he won titles regularly, and in 1942 gained four championships,
including the British Youth crown.
