BOXING NEWS COVERS THE BIG AMATEUR MATCHES

BOXING is riding the crest of a new TV boom in America.
Not since the 1950s has there been so much interest. (In
Britain, fans have been able to see at least some of the
international action on television, largely due to the aggressive
bidding of ITV).
The fighters have played their part in keeping interest
high. The last 12 months have seen so many excellent fights
we could have produced a list of 20 instead of the traditional
top 10 best fights of the year.

TAKING fifth place in our overseas top 10 foreign fights of
the past year is the marvellous battle between London-
Ugandan Cornelius Boza-Edwards and veteran Bobby Chacon,
of California, won by Boza on a corner retirement after
13 rounds at the Showboat casino hotel, Las Vegas on May 30.

TO HAVE someone like world light-heavyweight champion Freddie Mills
interested in your career and even offering advice would give any young
boxer's confidence a boost, and Bristol's Terry Ratcliffe was no exception.
Certainly Terry contributed in no small degree to the success of promotions
in the West of England, such as Bristol, Bath and Weston.
Born on August 19, 1930, Terry was more interested in gymnastics than
boxing when he was a youngster, but his father, Sam Ratcliffe, worked at
the national Smelting Company, and persuaded Terry to join that
firm's athletic club.
