NABC TITLE HUNT ON CHANNEL 4

THAT'S the verdict of former world middleweight champ Carlos Monzon on Marvin Hagler.
Monzon was at ringside in San Remo last weekend to watch Hagler demolish his official
challenger, Fulgencio Obelmejias, in five rounds (above). Full report on page 15.

BARRY McGUIGAN and Paul Huggins look likely to provide
one of the most explosive fights of the year when they
step into the ring at Ulster Hall, Belfast, on Tuesday, for
their 12-rounds final eliminator for Steve Sims's British
featherweight title.

A THIRD-round knockout of Winston Allen is unlikely
to cause much of a stir at international level, but
the controversy and drama surrounding the finish was
enough to send the fans home happy and keep the Joe
Bugner comeback firmly on course.

KEITH WALLACE, having his last fight before
challenging newly-crowned British champion
Kelvin Smart next month, produced a
world-class display to stop highly-ranked
American STEVE WHETSTONE in the
eighth round of their cracking 10 rounder,

FINCHLEY'S Lee Graham scored most of what little clean punches there
were to secure a points win over Alex Irvine in a distinctly dull main event at
the National Sporting Club.

FORMER world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks captured
the vacant NABF cruiserweight title with a
unanimous but hard earned 12-round decision over the
veteran Jesse Burnett of Los Angeles in a gruelling, exciting
fight at the Americana Resort Hotel.

MARVIN HAGLER easily retained his world middleweight
title by knocking out Venezuelan challenger Fulgencio
Obelmejias in the fifth round and then pleaded with Sugar
Ray Leonard to fight him.
Leonard was doing commentary ringside for Home Box
Office, the American cable TV giant. Sugar Ray is to reveal
his future plans at a press conference on November 9 and
the feeling is that he will announce his retirement.

EUROPEAN featherweight champion Pat Cowdell was far
too good for a game but outclassed Sepp Iten. He halted the
Swiss fighter after two minutes three seconds of the 12th and
last round in his defence of the EBU tide he won from
Salvatore Melluzzo and must have enhanced his chances of
another world title shot.

KENT strong boy Paul Bunce of Sheerness had to pull out
the stops to snatch a points victory over the promoting
club's Yibby Mustapha on the Downham Community dinner
show at the "Yorkshire Grey", Eltham.
