ROBERTO DURAN, the greatest fighter of his generation, goes down to a points defeat against
Wilfred Benitez in Las Vegas last weekend. Now Duran faces retirement. . . but the stigma of
his surrender against Ray Leonard has been lifted by a whole-hearted effort against a man who
is himself destined for legend. See Graham Houston's ringside reports on page 12-13
FORMER world junior-lightweight champion Cornelius
Boza-Edwards takes on tough American Hispanic Arturo
Leon in the first meaningful fight of his comeback over 10
rounds at the Albert Hall on Tuesday.
This will be Boza's second fight since being beaten inside
the distance so dramatically and so surprisingly by Rolando
Navarette and losing the title he won against Rafael Limon.
This fight, as opposed to his first comeback against Santiago
Alvarez, will tell us what Boza has left to contribute to
the sport.
TITLE bouts command the big purses but the best fights
are often those that pit up-and-coming fighters against each
other, with pride and prestige the spur.
Such a fight was the middleweight 10-rounder between
New Jersey state champ Bobby Czyz and New England
titleholder Robbie Sims, with Czyz battling his way to a
unanimous points win in front of a wildly excited crowd at
the Tropicana casino hotel in Atlantic City.
ENGLAND heavyweight Dave Garside settled a nagging
old domestic score when he unanimously outpointed bogeyman
Paul Lister at the Owtori Manor Social Club.
The local North East rivalry was settled conclusively in the bill
topping show closer on the United Services ABC open show.
