BELFAST bantamweight Davy Larmour powered himself
into British title contention with a career best win
over Eltham's Dave Smith at Ulster Hall.
Referee Bob McMillan scored the contest 100 points to
96 in the Irishman's favour — a scoreline that seemed
harsh on Smith, although there was no doubting Larmour's
superiority.
IN the official main event on next week's Copenhagen bill, Ayub Kalule
defends his newly-won WBA light-middleweight diadem for the first
time against American Steve Gregory . . . and if that name doesn't ring
a bell, don't feel bad about it, because there's no reason why it should.
The 24-year-old Gregory, a white club fighter from Columbus, Ohio,
has beaten one nonentity after another in compiling a 20-0-2 record (14
inside-schedule wins) over the past two-and-a-half years and, should, if
sanity ruled the boxing world, be light years away from a title fight, as
he has no results at top level to justify handing him a title shot.
ENGLAND'S senior side, studded with Olympic
hopefuls, came within an ace of victory over one of
Europe's traditionally more powerful nations at
the Sports Centre.
Laszlo Papp's Hungary ended up winners by six
bouts to five in the first full international between
the two countries since 1975 a scoreline which
included a hotly disputed and badly received
verdict at light-middleweight in favour of the
Hungarians.
JOHNNY CLAYDON has a tough task as he goes to
Lagos to c h a l l e n g e N i g e r i a n Hogan Jimoh for t he
Commonwealth lightweight title t o n i g h t (Friday).
It's a hard place for a British fighter to win and against
top-class opposition. Claydon can be relied on to give a good
show but anything other than an African win would be
surprising.
GORDON FERRIS continues his campaign for heavyweight
honours with an eight-rounder against AUSTIN
OKOYE at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Monday. Ron
Gray promotes.
