AIRD VERDICT STARTS A RIOT
Champs I'll never forget GUNNER MOIR.
Leonard makes it 22 in a row
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP SPECIAL REPORT
JAMES MOIR may not have been the greatest of British
heavyweight champions; he reigned for only 18 months.
I But he had the distinction of being the first Englishman
to fight for the world championship, if you consider, as
many do, that Bob Fitzsimmons was a naturalised
American when he took the title so dramatically from
| James J. Corbett at Carson City, Nevada, in 1897.
Born at Lambeth, in South
London, on April 17, 1879,
Moir was one of the many
soldiers and sailors who
boxed professionally in the
early years of the 20th Century.
Having joined the Royal
Marine Artillery as a lad, he
rose to the rank of Gunner
and at 18, whilst serving in
I India, was induced to take up
I boxing.
I ALWAYS encourage the formation of new Associations,
and have high hopes of two or more in the near
future, at Bournemouth, and at Bristol. Danny Mahoney
and Len Hart, both of whom are Tustrees of the Freddie
Mills Memorial Fund, have assured me that it is just a
matter of time before one is started in Bournemouth, and
a letter I recently received from Bert Nutt could form the
basis for a similar effort in Bristol.
BEV WALKER brings pro boxing back to Abingdon for the first
time in many years when he stages an eight-round main event
between local PETER NEAL and CARL BAILEY at the Old Gaol
on June 16.
