BRISCOE BATTERS MEXICAN FOE

REFEREEING a world title fight in a foreign country can be a
risky business as South Africa's top official Stan Christodoulou
found out.
Stan was in charge of the Ricardo Cardona-Soon Hyun Chung
match in Seoul when one of Chung's seconds, Jun Ho Kim, decided
the Colombian was fighting dirty.

IN BOXING NEWS on September 11, 1964, I was the first British boxing
writer to bring to the notice of the public a Cuban fighter named Jose
Legra. During the Castro regime Jose moved to Spain, arriving there in
1963 with his manager Kid Tunero, a top class middleweight who met
Frenchman Marcel Thil for the world title in 1933.
In my article I suggested that Legra would make an ideal opponent for
Howard Winstone, and a match duly took place in Blackpool during 1965,
Howard winning on points after a scintillating contest.

MIDDLEWEIGHT methuselah BENNIE BRISCOE made mincemeat out of
journeyman JOE BARRIENTES' face to force a sixth round technical
knockout at the Steel Pier.

THE father and son team of Mo and
Frank Gelb have pumped some much
needed life into the normally slow summer
season with weekly promotions in
Atlantic City. While Philly clubs are
closed during the hot months, the Gelbs
have found a perfect seaside venue.
The Resorts International Casino
have given them the use of their Steel
Pier theatre for a trial 10-week run and
so far the results have been promising.
They have been averaging over a thousand
fans at the 1,500-seater.
