Rafferty beats the McTaggart record

TWO vacant Midland Area titles were decided at the
Evesham Sporting Club where TONY ALLEN and
ROMAL AMBROSE became new champions of the
light-heavy and middleweight divisions, respectively.
Birmingham's Allen took his title with a stoppage of
STEVE FENTON, Leicester, in the ninth of their scheduled
10-rounder.
In an all-Leicester affair, Ambrose scored a count-out
win over PAUL SHUTT in the seventh of their 10-
rounder.
Both contests were dramatic and packed with incident,
especially the middleweight match in which six
knockdowns were recorded by the heavy-hitting
Ambrose. But it was Allen who really caught the eye
with an elegant exhibition of steady, controlled boxing,
combined with ruthless finishing.

BIG surprise at the SOUTH EAST LONDON DIVISIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
at the Town Hall was the early elimination of Hollington Club's classy
Dennis Horgan, outstanding winner in the NABC finals, who was outpointed
by Fisher Club's Lenny Thorne.

WELSH light-heavyweight champ Chris Lawson has a
potentially tough first defence against Ken Jones of
Gorseionon at Haverfordwest on Monday.
The show, promoted by Eddie Thomas, will take place at the
800-capacity Market Hall.
