ONE-SIDED WIN FOR HAMSHO
CHARLIE NASH talks hopefully of a second shot at Jim
Watt's WBC lightweight title on the strength of the
unanimous 12-rounds points win over Spaniard Francisco
Leon which made the Derry southpaw, once more, champion
of Europe, but Charlie's case for a rematch is not yet
complete.
MEXICO'S Salvador Sanchez retained his WBC
featherweight title with a unanimous, but hard fought, 15-
rounds decision over 21-year-old Puerto Rican-born Juan
Laporte of Brooklyn, N.Y.
There were no knockdowns in the nationally televised
fight at the County Coliseum, El Paso, Texas, but Laporte
was cut over the right eye and both his eyes were bruised
and swollen. He also had blood coming from his nose in the
closing round.
JACK KEARNS managed boxers long before he came across Jack Dempsey and
made boxing history. Born at Waterloo in Michigan in 1882, he became involved in
the sport as a young man, going round with a pal who was a pro fighter.
He soon realised that there was more money to be made in the boxing business
without having to take a punch on the nose, and the best and must lucrative way
was to beome a manager and so be sure of a substantial percentage of a boxer's
earnings — win, lose or draw.
