BUCHANAN'S FIRST FIGHT IN BRITAIN FOR 7 YEARS

GILBODY'S GLORY!

ONE afternoon four years ago, fight manager Don Manuel was sitting in his
office in Las Vegas trying to figure out the best way to move his lightheavyweight
contender Eddie "Bossman" Jones into a shot at the title when
the phone rang.
"Somebody down at the Hoover Street gym told me Eddie had just got
knocked out." recalled Manuel.
"I asked who did it and was told Mike Weaver." Weaver remembers: " I just
hit him with hale punch — a right hand that only travelled four or five
inches. But he went down and was out cold."
A few weeks ago Mike Weaver dropped another bomb and, this time, the
shock waves shook the fight business all over the world.

ROBERTO DURAN is still only 28 years old. He was one
of the greatest lightweight champions of all time, and
has won 73 out of 74 fights, stopping 57 opponents
but despite all of this, I have yet to meet an expert
who would actually pick him to beat Sugar Ray Leonard.
Since he moved up to welterweight, Roberto has had
to go the full distance against Adolfo Viruet, Jimmy
Heair, Carlos Palomino and Zeferino Gonzalez.
Perhaps it has been this failure of the old Duran
knockout punch that has influenced the experts, but it is
a tremendous compliment to Leonard's ability to be such
a big favourite.

LIGHTNING-FAST Ray Gilbody, domestically in a class
of his own as a flyweight last season, established himself
as indisputable king of Britain's bantams with a two
round destruction of London champion Jim McDonnell
in the George Wimpey sponsored Centenary year ABA
finals at Wembley Arena.

THE National Association of Boys' Clubs are organising
a boxing course in the summer and I strongly recommend
it for lads who are dedicated to the sport and look
as though they are going to achieve something.
It is open to all boxers in the 13-16 age group, not
necessarily NABC champions. The course involves a
stay at Alsager College, Cheshire, from Monday, July 28
to Saturday August 2 and will give the youngsters a
chance to get right inside a boxing atmosphere, similar
to that involving a man in a training camp for a world
title fight. Total cost is £55.
