Purse Quarrel Threatens Scott Bout
TOUGH Bernabe Villacampo of the Philippines has a good chance of 1 winning the World Boxing Association's flyweight crown in October.
Masaki Kanehira, manager of champion Hiroyuki Ebihara, confirmed
upon his return from Manila that a contract had been signed for the
Ebihara-Villacampo title match in Osaka in October.
He said the contract signed with Lope Sarreal Jr., Villacampo's
business manager, called for the match on October 5, but that it will
probably be held on October 19 because this date has been asked by the
Nippon Television Company, which is sponsoring the fight.
Kanehira said he had made an advance payment of Villacampo's
purse in Manila but did not disclose the amount.
Kanehira, who saw Villacampo stop Yuzo Narumi, No 5 Japanese flyweight,
in the fourth round in Manila, said he believed the Filipino to be
a strong fighter. He added that Ebihara will have to be at his best to
win.
Villacampo has not lost in his four bouts in Japan and there are
those who think that he will wrest the crown from Ebihara. The uppermost
reason, they say, is that Ebihara, a southpaw like Villacampo, has
lost his knockout punch.
